Personal branding is one of the most lucrative income streams I currently have in my portfolio. With that being said, it is one of the most time consuming income streams that I have created. Making money from a personal brand takes a lot of hard work, time, and commitment creating excellent content and building an audience with a specific group of people. It takes an extended period of time to build trust and offer enough value to cultivate a following online. Making money from a personal brand is all about helping people solve their problems.

Cost to Start This Business: $0 to $100+

To get started with personal branding it doesn’t take a lot of money. If you already have a computer and a webcam you can actually start for virtually no money. You can sign up for a free account on YouTube, Facebook, and Instagram and you can begin to create high value content immediately.

Income potential: $10,000+ per month

There are countless ways to make money through your personal brand. These include google adsense, selling products you create, consulting, affiliate marketing, sponsorships, membership websites, and the list goes on and on.

How Long to Start Making Money: 3 – 6 months

For me it took about 3 months to start making money through my personal brand. It really depends on your knowledge base when it comes to internet marketing and content creation. I have a good friend who created a YouTube channel and now have over 50,000 subscribers in less than 1 year. He created a course and now earns $100,000+ per month. Don’t expect this to happen to you but it proves that it’s possible.

How much time does this business require: 10 to 40+ hours per week

Again, building a personal brand is all about creating high value content and connecting with your audience. At first your audience will be very small and not many people will know that your brand exists. For me I spend 10-20 hours per week creating content on YouTube, Facebook, Instagram and my blog. The great thing about building a personal brand is you can put in as much or as little effort as you’d like. Just get started and if you really enjoy what it is you’re talking about with your content the time will fly by!

Passive: Yes

The thing about building a personal brand is that it’s very active at first. But, overtime you can take your foot off the pedal \ and let your hard work ride. For me I have a YouTube channel that earns over $2,000 to $4,000 per month on autopilot. Now, if I was to stop creating content at-least a couple time per week the income would slowly decrease. But overall it’s a great revenue stream with very minimal work needed to maintain. There are so many ways to earn passive income from a personal brand, YouTube is just scratching the surface.

Whats the best way to build a following?

Personally I believe YouTube is the best option. With the popularity of video YouTube serves as one of the best ways to share engaging content to build a following. In addition, I would recommend sharing your content on your own personal blog, Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat.

Who should I serve and what type of content should I create?

Take some time to think about what you’re passionate and knowledge about. If you love to sell on eBay then creating content will be easy. Many people make the mistake of thinking they need to be an expert in order to create content. This couldn’t be farthest from the truth. I believe one of the biggest opportunities content creators have currently while building a personal brand is documenting their journey with whatever it is they are doing with full transparency. You don’t have to be the best at what you do, just be honest, real, authentic, and share your ups and down, wins and losses, and people will follow and trust you!

How long does it take to start making money from a personal brand?

This really depends. If you have great content you could start making money next week through a YouTube channel. All you have to do is turn your ads on through monetization and advertisers will start paying you when people watch their ads on your videos. If you want to make money through selling your own products and services, affiliate marketing, or anything else under the sun it could take anywhere from 3 to 12 months.

What’s the best way to monetize my following?

To be honest there is no best way. This will differ for each person, and will depend greatly on their goals they have for the business. I use YouTube as my front end monetization strategy through google adsense. On the back end, I use email marketing to drive sales to products, membership sites, and affiliate offers.

What are the biggest mistakes to avoid when building a personal brand?

1.) Building a brand around content you do not enjoy making
2.) Promoting products, services, affiliate offers that do not benefit your audience
3.) Not being consistent with content
4.) Not listening to your audience and really learning what they are struggling with
5.) Thinking only about yourself. Your success is going to be solely based around your ability to help your audience.
